Shanghai Enflame Technology (688801.SS), a Chinese artificial intelligence chipmaker backed by Tencent, opened 188 percent above its initial public offering price on Friday on Shanghai's STAR Market, closing the session with gains exceeding 200 percent in one of the most striking debut-day performances of the year.
The company raised 6.12 billion yuan (approximately 911 million dollars) by selling 43 million shares at an IPO price of 142.18 yuan each, according to Bloomberg. When trading began, shares leapt to 410 yuan, a premium of 188 percent over the offer price. The stock continued climbing through the session, with Bloomberg reporting retail investors had placed orders for more than 4,000 times the shares available in the public tranche.
At those levels, Enflame's market capitalization reached approximately 187 billion yuan (27.9 billion dollars), according to Reuters. The valuation places the company among the most valuable newly listed firms on the STAR Market, Shanghai's technology-focused board modeled on Nasdaq.
From Startup to Star Market Darling
Enflame was founded in 2018 by Zhao Lidong and Zhang Yalin, two former AMD engineers who set up operations in a temporary office in Shanghai's Zhangjiang high-tech district. The company designs AI accelerators intended to compete with products from Nvidia and other international chipmakers, targeting cloud computing providers and enterprises that need high-performance hardware for training and running artificial intelligence models.
The company is considered the last of China's so-called "four little dragons" of domestic GPU makers to go public, following earlier listings by peers. Tencent Holdings is the largest single shareholder, with Tencent Technology and related parties holding a combined 20.26 percent stake, according to the company's IPO filing. Wuyuefeng Phase II and affiliated entities hold 5.71 percent, while the China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund Phase II holds 4.32 percent.
Use of Proceeds and Competitive Landscape
Enflame has said it plans to deploy the IPO proceeds toward developing and commercializing its fifth- and sixth-generation AI chips, aiming to narrow the performance gap with Nvidia's high-end data center products. The company reported higher revenue in 2025, though detailed financial figures were not immediately disclosed in public filings reviewed by Reuters.
The debut comes amid a broader surge in Chinese AI chip listings. In July, memory chipmaker CXMT saw its shares soar nearly 466 percent on its first day of trading on the same STAR Market, underscoring strong investor appetite for domestic semiconductor firms benefiting from Beijing's push to build self-sufficiency in AI hardware.
While the first-day pop signals robust demand, the long-term outlook remains uncertain. Chinese tech IPOs have a mixed record of sustaining post-listing gains, and several high-profile STAR Market debutants have subsequently retreated from their opening highs. The commercial viability of domestic AI chip firms ultimately depends on their ability to deliver competitive products at scale, in a market where Nvidia still holds a commanding lead in both performance and ecosystem breadth.
